- Abstract
The article examines the quantitative, spatial, dispersal dynamics, as well as the personnel and national structure of the irretrievable losses the Russian army suffered during counter-terrorism efforts in North Caucasus (August 1999 – 2012). A complete biographical guide of dead servicemen (more than 3,720 people) was used as an empirical base for the study. The relationship between the scale of army casualties, their Russian geography and their share in the total losses of Russian security officials made it possible to single out three main periods in the evolution of Russian counter-terrorism efforts in North Caucasus: combined armed operation (1999–2000/2001), comprehensive counter-terrorism efforts (2000/2001–2005/2006), series of local CTE (since 2006/2007). Directly in the spatial distribution of army casualties on the territory of Russia, three stages are also clearly recorded – federal, south Russian, and North Caucasian.
