Different approaches in the Soviet Psychology to the problem of abilities are considered. The question is raised of characteristics. It is pointed out that the personality is the subject of the abilities development process. The study of personality in its life-activity would permit us to better understand the process of transformation of potential abilities in the actual ones. The regulation principle is discussed in the context of abilities problem.
