Abstract

Comparative analysis of socio-psychological peculiarities of law enforcement officers (LEO) including corrupt-officers, officers convicted of general crimes and officers who are not inclined to destructive behavior has been conducted. The objective of the research was to reveal correlations between deformation in interpersonal relations and the type of committed crime. The hypothesis of the research was put as follows: deformation in interpersonal relations in LEO in the sphere of organization of control has an impact on general crime commitment, while deformation of interpersonal relations in emotional sphere has an impact on corrupt ones. The study included the following participants: 129 law enforcement officers with positive professional reputation and who are not inclined to destructive behavior; 56 former law enforcement officers who were convicted of corrupt crimes and 94 officers convicted of general crimes not related to official duties. The following methods were used in the research: form aimed at studying of socio-demographic data, organizational relations, quality of professional duties’ execution; William Schutz’s Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior Instrument (adaptation by A.A. Rukavishnikov); questionnaires “Identification of integral forms of communicative aggressiveness” by V.V. Boyko, “Life style index” by R. Plutchik, H. Kellerman, H. R. Conte, “Diagnostics of person’s motivational structure” by V.Eh. Mil’man, and projective test “Understanding of crime victims” by A.V. Molostov, O.V. Samofalova. The results of correlation analysis have shown that deformation of interpersonal relations can contribute to commission of crimes by law enforcement officers (p ≤ 0,05). Thus, the existence of problems in the sphere of organization of control in interpersonal relations results in general crimes commitment, while corrupt crimes are the result of problems in emotional sphere. At the same time, officers with positive professional reputation without deviations in interpersonal relations have a tendency to use psychological defenses (denial, compensation, projection, intellectualization).
