Abstract
The paper examines Leo Tolstoy''s correspondence with Indians. The letters had been written over the period of 18961910, when his teaching had already been well known all over the world. Indians rated him as a prophet, mahatma, who could find solutions to their burning issues. Their letters illustrated the problems that existed in Indian society in the beginning of the XXth centure.
