Abstract

Recent developments in the transatlantic relations testify unusually sharp divergence between the United States and the EU on some key bilateral and international issues. The article scrutinizes the transatlantic controversies in security, foreign policy and energy domains. It considers the latest upsurge of tension in the U.S.-German relationship, and highlights the underlying perceptions that guide D. Trump’s unwelcome attitude towards the European Union. Specific features of the latest U.S. legislation designed to thwart the Nord Stream-2 and the Turk Stream projects are also examined. Close attention is focused on how Germany and the EU responded to the U.S. demands. The author attempted to figure out basic motives of the U.S. pressurizing the European partners, and to determine sources that fuel ongoing economic spats between the United States and Europe. In conclusion he sets out a number of key options of how the transatlantic relationship could proceed after the U.S. presidential election in November 2020.
