Abstract
Stalin’s interest in Japan was evoked by the Japanese agression in Manchuria in 1931 which created real menace to the Soviet Far East. From that time the Soviet-Japanese relations became one of the priorities in his foreign activities. He strictly followed the line of defender of the USSR national interests in the Far East in the face of the real threat coming out of the Japanese militarism. Stalin paid special attention to the return by the USSR of strategically important territories lost by the tsarist Russia in favor of Japan.
