Abstract
Temple fairs (miao hui) are an important part of Chinese culture. Traditionally combining cults, rites and religious beliefs with trade and colorful performances in the past, contemporary temple fairs have evolved into massive events supported at local and governmental levels. Though some of the sacred significance of temple fairs has faded, social communication remains its main function.
