Abstract
The article analyzes the main stages of development and the current state of the problem of rumors in the foreign scientific tradition. Special attention ispaid to the classification, existing interpretations of factors that spread rumors, and trends in the content of messages in the social environment. Some prospects for further study of the phenomenon of rumors are determined. In particular, it is considered appropriate to take into account the specifics of the dialogical interaction of distributors of unconfirmed information in order to better understand their nature.
