Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between the level of functional literacy of adults and their involvement in socio-economic life according to the resultsThe international programme of assessment of adult competences. The hypothesis was tested that people with a low level of literacy are excluded from society and find themselves in a “risk group”, without work, with compromised health and unclear prospects in life. It was not fully confirmed in Russia, but it was found that Russians with a high level of literacy are deprived – compared to the OECD countries. Hypotheses are proposed for further research.
