Abstract
The causes of mass unrest, uprisings and revolutions in recent years are often associated with the effect of “youth bulge “(”youth bulge") – a significant increase in the share of young people in the adult population. In the case of the Russian revolution of 1905, the question of the existence of the “youth bulge” and its role remains debatable. Using data from the 1897 census and current demographic statistics, the author shows that the “youth bulge” existed in Russia. The article analyzes the specific consequences of the significant growth of the youth cohort. One of these consequences was the departure of young people from the village to the city and the growth of the proletarian strata of the population, another consequence – the growth of the number of students and the activation of the student movement.
