- Abstract
- This essay is devoted to the origins and development of the aircraft industry in Czarist Russia. It sets forth the history of the fi rst airplane factories and their role in the establishment of military airpower, provides information about the number and models of aircraft produced by each factory, illuminates the role of the state in the development of aviation, and examines the effects of World War I and the revolution of 1917 on Russian aircraft production. Finally, the article analyzes the transition from licensed copying of foreign airplanes to the industrial production of Russian-designed aircraft, with descriptions of specifi c models approved for such production.
