Abstract
The article is a historical and ethnographic study of the place of tea in the Kazakh culture. Drawing on an array of archival and fi eld sources, the author examines the history of introduction of tea in the nomad Kazakh culture, the infl uence of Russian, Chinese, Tatar, Bashkir, and Central Asian cultures on the spreading of this drink among the nomadic elite, the changes in everyday life routines, the emergence of new utensils, and other issues. The author explains the ways in which tea came to play an important symbolic part in various ethnic customs and cultural worldview.
