Abstract
The article deals with the problem of the apocaliptic and hymnological in Chekhov's works which are regarded by the author as polar bases of his world picture. A number of representative examples attest an active interaction between Chekhov's works and the Prophetic books of the Bible which is attained through a system of subtle allusions. They enrich semantic possibilities of the writer's language enabling him to express the prophetic meaning of the biblical primary source.
