Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the mediation role of parenting in the relation between child individual differences and externalizing behavior in preschool and primary school age Russian children. Participants were primary caregivers of 1139 children (51% females): 370 preschool age and 769 school age children. The results show the mediation role of dysfunctional parenting practices: disagreeable and unconscientious children were exposed to elevated levels of corporal punishment, inconsistent parenting in preschool age and poor monitoring and supervision in primary school age; these parenting practices in turn were related to higher levels of externalizing behavior. Our findings also demonstrate that when child individual differences have been accounted for, positive parenting behaviors and involvement were not related to externalizing problems. It has also been shown that the relations between individual differences, parenting and externalizing behavior do not differ depending on child gender.
